CLOUD'S BURDEN

THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF FINAL FANTASY VII AND ADVENT CHILDREN

* CLOUD STRIFE

Cloud is blond with spiky hair, vivid greenish-blue eyes (a distinction due to exposure to mako and a distinction of the SOLDIER members), dark purple or blue clothing, a spikey, dark grey pauldron on his left shoulder and his Buster Sword which previously belonged to his friend, Zach, and the SOLDIER, Angeal Hewley before him. At first, Cloud appears cold and uncaring, but he gradually changes as he resolves his romantic and psychological issues and adapts to the role of leader.

* BARRET WALLACE

He is tall, strong and imposing, with strong objections to the operations of the Shinra Company concerning the Planet. During an attack against the Company in his hometown of Corel, he lost his right arm, which was then replaced by a gun-arm. Barret grew up in the small, coal-mining village of Corel. He was a leading advocate in cooperation with Shinra in order to build a mako reactor in his village, as he believed that it would lead to an easier life for his people. But the anti-Shinra group known as AVALANCHE attacked the reactor and Shinra responded by burning down the town of Corel, believing that the people of Corel took part in the attack. Shinra killed many citizens, including Barret’s wife, Myrna. Barret and his best friend, Dyne, were out of the village during the massacre, but when they returned, they were attacked by Shinra troops led by Scarlet. Though Barret survived, he was shot in the right forearm by gunfire which rendered it useless, while Barret tried to prevent Dyne from falling off a cliff. Assuming that Dyne was dead, Barret adopted Marlene, Dyne’s daughter and traveled to Midgar. He had a gun-prothesis put in the place of his right arm and began seeking revenge against the Shinra Company. He eventually became the leader of the second incarnation of the AVALANCHE group. But he remained unaware of the full extremity of the former AVALANCHE incarnation. Later on, the group breaks up and Barret chooses to continue on his mission to save the Planet by joining Cloud in the battle against Sephiroth. Following Sephiroth’s defeat and the end of the Meteor threat, Barret traveled around the world in order to help rebuild the Planet’s infrastructure and find new sources to replace mako. In Advent Children his efforts led to the discovery of oil. Barret once again joins the fight against Bahamut SIN, He plays a part in helping the WRO as shown in Dirge of Cerberus.

* TIFA LOCKHART

She is an expert in Zangan-Ryu martial arts and uses her fists and feet as weapons. She has long black hair with the ends parted like a dolphin’s tail and brown eyes. She also wears a mini-skirt, which became an iconic aspect of the character’s design.

* AERITH GAINSBOROUGH

Also known as Aeris Gainsborough. In Final Fantasy VII, she is 22 years old and joints AVALANCHE in order to defeat Shinra, that pollutes the world with an energy source called Mako. As the story unfolds, the player learns that Aerith is an “Ancient”, the first human race that lived on the Planet.

This character is non human, and instead resembles a red lion. His original name was “Nanaki”. He seems to be the last one of a race that sworn to protect their home of Cosmo Canyon with their lives. Despite his appearance, he is quite young according to the standard of his species. His race is gifted by a very long life. Nanaki believed that his father, Seto, was a coward who abandoned their tribe in the middle of a war with a now extinct race called the GI Tribe. Nanaki is therefore very ashamed to be his son. He had a mate whose name was Dinne. But she doesn’t appear in Final Fantasy VII because she isolated herself in a 2-year meditation period.

In Final fantasy VII, Cait Sith is a cat that sits on top of giant stuffed moogle, to which he gives orders via a megaphone.

* CID HIGHWIND

He is always swearing, losing his temper and chain-smoking cigarettes. But he has a good heart and even temporarily becomes the leader of AVALANCHE when Cloud is incapacitated with Mako Poisoning. The residents of Rocket Town call him “The Captain” because he is some kind of mayor in the town. He is a legend for the maintenance crew of Shinra’s airships. Since childhood, Cid dreamed of becoming the first human in space. He almost achieved his dreams with the Shinra Spce Program, four years before Final Fantasy VII. But, as Shinra n°26 was about to launch, Cid discovered that ean engineer named Shera defied orders and ran a last-minute double-check on the oxygen tanks. Continuing the launch would have resulted in the death of Shera so Cid aborted the mission in order to save her. Therefore, Shinra concluded that space exploration was not financially viable and stopped all space projects. Cid blamed Shera for destroying his dream and she completely accepted the blame as she was devoted to him and his dreams. All she wanted by then was to atone for her action. Later on, it is revealed that she was right to be concerned with the oxygen tanks as an explosion occurred, while trapping Cid into orbit after another successful launch. Cid finally forgives Shera, discovering thus that he has respect for her and her work. Cloud’s group meets Cid in Rocket Town. Cid, realizing that the space program is definitely abandoned, joins the group against Shinra. Later on, when the group and Tifa were trapped by Shinra at Junon, it was Cid who saved them, taking them on board the Highwind. That’s how he was made leader of the AVALANCHE when Cloud was incapacitated, because of his actions as captain of the ship. Cid is also an excellent pilot and desigend several aicrafts: the “Tiny Bronco” and the éHighwind” are among them. Later on, he fles the successor of the Highwind, a ship of unknown ancient origin and called it “The Shera”. One year after Advent Children, Cid has become a legendary airship pilot and the elader of an airship division with support from the WRO. He leads the attack against the Deep Ground’s Soldiers in Midgar. He does his part in defeating Omega WEAPON by destroying a Shinra reactor, cutting off the monster’s power. Cid then marriesShera.
